Types of Japanese Drum
Roughly, there are two types of drums exit. Skin tacked type and Rope tighten type. First one used to made by one piece of wood, then gradually changed to use barrel type or artificial material such as FRP etc. Drum skins are tacked on the body directly. Basically, they are heavy and can make loud sound with long sustain. Second one use basically thin pieces of sider tree made as barrel so the body would lighter than first one, and they stitched drum skin to steel ring and tighten by rope. Basically, they have light sound with short sustain.
Exceptionally, those musicians on the theatrical presentation such as Noh, Kabuki, or Gagaku, their drums are basically made as rope tighten drum skin with solid one piece of zelkova tree.
Nagado-Daiko
Typical type of Japanese drum as known in general
A typical type of drum. The one with a diameter of 90 cm or more is called an O-daiko which means a huge drum. The most suitable wood for this type is zelkova. Because they are created by hollowing out a single tree, the price of an O-daiko can be enough to buy a luxury car or house.
